Azasite is My New Best Friend!

I am 7 days into my Azasite and I my eyes are wetter and pain-free for the first time in 15 months! It's so nice to wake up in the morning with clear vision and wet eyes! Just like old times. I assume this means I definitely have blepharitis! I hope others on this board have the success I am having! Azasite 2x/day for 7 days then 1x/ day for 3 weeks is my prescription.

I've tried Azasite in one eye for about a week and felt no difference with the other eye. It irritated it a little and that was about it. I think the big difference is whether you have blepharitis or not, which I guess I don't have. I may continue Azasite for a little while just to make sure.

You are probably right. My blepharitis has been basically oppressed for a long time by a constant regimen of hot compresses, flax&fish oil as well as cyclosporine cream (like Restasis). So Azasite did nothing for my MGD dry eyes. In fact, I'd say it made things a little worse for the 14 days period I tried it because it 1) irritated the conjunctiva and 2) glued the eye lashes and thereby inflamed the eyelid a bit.

I think thats it, if bleptheritis is the main culprit, caused by bacteria- azasite works well. But if MGD is caused by something like ocular rosacea i dont think it does. Hmm i was hoping it would have an anti inflammatory effect on my inner eyelids. I tried it for 4 days didn't notice a difference- i know this isn't long enough, but my inflamed throat came back (keeps coming and going) which ment my eyes went normal, so there was no way of me knowing. But i don't think it will help due to reason i have stated. I dont even have crusty bleph anymore, i got it ages ago but that was after getting MGD, so the bleph isn't causing the MGD.

Exactly, I think in 99,9% of cases MGD causes inflamation (=blepharitis).
And the sad truth is that for a lot of us there isn't really an explanation why the meibomian glands are malfunctioning.

Sometimes body systems just give up. It's all part of being human and not a machine...

TBH im confused by this inflammation causes MGD and vise versa!

I heard before that inflammation causes the MGD in the majority of cases, or blockage of glands cause mgd or both? Dr latkany said this was the case as well.

For me i know it hasnt packed up, because they work fine when the inflamed inner eyelids goes down due to other illnesses in my body.

Does blepheritis just mean inflamed eyelids? or does it just relate to that caused by bacteria.

I was just prescribed AzaSite. My instructions from the doc say to clean eyes with warm water. Use hot compress. Using clean pinky finger apply a drop of antibiotic to the end of the pinky and apply drop to the entire last line of the upper and lower eyelids. Do this nightly for two weeks. After that apply antibiotic twice weekly to avoid development of resistence to the treatment.

I don't know how many refills she gave me as the prescription is at the pharmacy now. They were out of AzaSite and it is supposed to be in tonight. I will update this later.

I have MGD due to rosacea/ocular rosacea. Based on publications, MGD that is caused by rosacea is usually considered posterior blepharitis.

I was told by Dr. L not to do any lid scrubs (as I do not have crusting) and to not use heat compresses. i am to express the glands every night using a qtip.

I recently went on Azasite and Oracea. I thought I was cured after two weeks of the azasite but I am not sure if the oracea is doing anything. About 16 days of 1 drop per day led to the symptoms slide back so I went back to twice per day and the symptoms are slowly fading away again. It will be very interesting to see what the ultimate answer will be one day for this problem.

So, to recap, I have ocular rosacea and mild facial rosacea which is supposed to be the reasoni for my MGD. If the MGD is not treated I simply to not excrete oil and my eyes become irritated. When i first found out I had a problem it got so bad I had keratitis in one eye.

I began n-acetylcysteine and glutithione today to see if that helps anything. I also read somewhere that 3,000 mg of barleans flax is supposed to make a difference. I take lovaza fish oil and flax but not sure if they are helping.

I just started N-acetylcysteine and glutithione. I would google both to see what the postiive effects are

I just started to take azasite, and it seems to help. What is the main purpose or benefits you have seen? I have been told it was to get rid of any bacteria on the eye lids.

                    Thanks!

I never thought I would get to post here, but at last ,
I can post something positive .
I have suffered with a painful case of blepharitis for over two years.
I have been to multiple specialist, tried everything , and anything, but nothing helped till now.

My newest Dr. prescribed a 14 day course of Azasite, and WOW! what a difference. Only 3 days in, and I feel so much better.
I actually wanted to post this a couple of days earlier, but I waited in case I was mistaken.
Three whole days without pain has been wonderful.
I just had to spread the word, in case it can help someone else.

I saw some others post, that it had not helped them, but for myself, WOW!

It was not the decrease in Azasite dosing, it simply seemed to irritate my eyes.

I discontinued the Azasite and it seems that my eyes got much better, but stil have some veins floating around. I wish they would go away. It seems there are a couple veins in my left eye that wont budge ever since my keratitis.

So right now I am to experiement with the Azasite. I am continuing the oracea. It says one month to two months is when you see help. I will say for the most part I am feeling better. I just want these DAMN VEINS to go away lol.

What a weirrrrrd, weird condition I tell you.

                      • I have started this again, and have to say it does give decent relief for some hours after application, it seems to stay on the eye for a while. Shock horror- it is better than any A tear for this purpose!!

I dont have loads as i live in the UK but will see how it goes.

skygoddesses success gives me hope that one day i may be writing in the dry eye triumphs.. mmm prob not though.

                        • Interesting that you mention this....my dry eye buddy said her doctor didn't like Azasite, BUT thought that the vehicle in which it is compounded is wonderful....but they don't market and sell it as a bland drop.

I was on 4 weeks of Azasite - no real improvement ;(

After putting one drop of it in, eyes feel quite good, but it is very hard to tell if its anything to do with azasite because my eyes are very up and down due to this ongoing tonsilitis i have had for the past 6 months. Past few days my throat has been getting better and my inflammed eyelids and dry eye is back in full force (as per usual). so thought its time to give azasite a try.
Did you manage to get it in the UK or did you source via the web link you posted earlier? Not sure if this would help me (posterior bleph, excessive MGD) but it's on the possible things that might help list.

No someone sent me some, i run out soon i want to try it for longer, because it gives really good relief. Its to early to tell if it will improve symptoms. I was on it before 1 1/2 weeks before (but throat thing came back and eyes got better at the time) but it didnt improve things but gave relief much better than A tears. it stays on the eye for ages and i think ive noticed some reduction in inflammation.. hard to tell.

Id say from your description- posterior blepth- you would be the type of patient this is most likely to benefit.. so its worth trying.

I have MGD caused by inflammation of eyelids but dont know if its the same as posterior blepth.

I have emailed edrugnet where i got restasis before asking them if they are likely to get it in any time soon.

                              • i just started using azasite, the dr told me to use it with alrex but i'm reading that you shouldn't use a steroid with an antibiotic because the steroid will make the infection worse? (dr said i have mgd and the glands may be infected, eyelids are swollen and painful) also i was under the impression the azasite should help the inflammation as well? i'm sorry i'm very new to all this and it hasn't been explained to me very well by the drs i've seen so i'm very confused...
