  • I think my dry eye is mostly past me now!

I am nearing 6 months of being mostly comfortable most of the time. It is something I am grateful for every single day. Having had some really severe months last winter I doubt I will ever forget how hard that was. I never dreamed I would feel this good again. I have not had actual pain now for months, and never more than 2-3 days of fairly mild discomfort at any time for the last 6 months. Most days I rarely think about it anymore and just realized that I have not used a drop in my eyes for nearly a week.

    What I think helped:

One eye with 2 permanent plugs and the lesser eye with one.
Humidifiers, flaxseed oil, and drinking lots of water and resuming regular exercise several times a week which I strongly believe increased healing circulation. Hot compresses helped too.
Huge reduction in stress in my life.
Synergeyes contacts (I credit 80% of my improvement to this one thing).

I am back to wearing contacts 14-15 hours a day, 20/20 vision, no drippy eyes, no feeling of sand in my eyes, no waking up to erosions, and I am doing all outdoor activities again, even running on windy days. I have lost that annoying feeling of thick eyelid margins, all inflammation is completely gone and has not reappeared since the third day after I got the new contacts which hold moisture to my eye every waking moment.

I just don't want anyone here to give up hope. Some of us do get better, much better. Hang in there and keep the faith. I credit my amazing doctor for promising the first day I saw him that he absolutely could promise me that he could get dry eye suffers comfortable once again. He has done this for my sister in law and for 2 of my friends too.

The one thing that did not work was steroid drops. They made me horribly worse.

I rejoice with you Rubyslippers! I too am feeling mostly great these days. It's such a relief to realize your eyes are not on your mind every minute anymore! For me I think time has done much in the way of healing but I also think the months and months of taking care of my eyes using the information I found on this website brought me to where I am today.

It really is very important for people to know that improvement is possible, thanks for sharing!

    Happy Holidays!!!

Glad you're feeling a lot better now! I'm considering getting plugs for my eyes, would you say that they've helped you significantly? I'm really anxious about having them put in my eyes - but I'd do anything to rid myself of dry eye

Yes, I would put the plugs second in line to the Synergeyes. I got the plugs a couple of months before the Synergeyes and I was doing some better with them. The dissolvable ones were mildly, but perceptibly helpful, but for some reason the permanent ones did even better for me. I know that even with the Synergeyes, if I lost my plugs I would be right back in to get them replaced. When I do need drops they stay on my eyes long enough to really help. Overall, I can tell they keep the moisture at a much better level. I was nervous about trying them, but had no problems and they have stayed in even though I use towels and washcloths on my eyes and even rub my eyes now and then. My doctor feels that they are in for good and that I need to be only mildly careful about them.

Congratulations on your progress, this is great news! I hope it keeps up. I wanted to second what you said about plugs. Several times I have had dissolvable plugs (6-month ones) in my eyes and I barely noticed a difference, but I recently got the permanent kind with the cap (uppers and lowers) and the difference is huge. I think with the dissolvable ones, they either dont provide complete blockage as they dissolve, or they work their way out of place, and since you cant see them, it is hard to determine if they are still there are not. Anyway, congrats again!!!

Shells, I agree with you. The dissolvable ones made a difference right away, but it was short lived and not nearly as effective as the permanents. I got the ones with the little cap on top too. He set them in very close to the top of my duct to begin with and then a few days after seeing I would have no trouble he really mashed them down in good and they are in firmly. You cannot even see them with plain vision, only when he puts a light in there with the microscope.

I'm definetly considering getting plugs for my eyes now - might even ring up the doctor to arrange it tomoro morning. Is it wise to let a doctor insert the plugs, or let an eye specialist do it? My local doctor doesnt seem too knowledgeable about dry eye syndrome (is it normal for them to google it during a session!? lol).

I think I've asked this a couple of times already but never got an answer.
I don't need lenses (I had LASIK) , but wonder if wearing Synergeyes could be beneficiary to me ...

Do they produce moist ? or are they just letting trough more oxygen than regular contacts.

You treat them with a special solution that holds moisture on your eye. My doctor says it appears that my dry eye is now 90% cured as a result. I am no longer doing hot compresses or anything else. I continue the flaxseed because I know it is good for me. I rarely need a drop on my eye even once a week. Sometimes I put some drops in just to clean my eyes and so my contacts come out a bit easier. I am one happy camper these days. I can even use a space heater in my office again and drive with my car heater on full blast. One year ago I was in he11 with my eyes but my doctor assured me that he knew what to do and given time he would get me here. He did it!!

Had a check up today. He says the Synergeyes have my eyes "remarkably managed" and he is prescribing these more and more with similar results in others. He says I am his "veteran" and he feared I was a fluke, but there have been no exceptions. Every dry eye patient is markedly improved.

Rubyslippers, you are my hero! I've been watching your progress and am thrilled these have worked for you. I hope they continue to help you and others that may try them. Mostly thanks for putting your experience on the board. Lucy

                          Hi everybody,

i will try these lenses soon. I will have to fly to London.
To be honest, I dont really believe or expect them to help me. I've tried so much and nothing really helped (exept the plugs).
But: expectations reduce joy , so I will just hope!

I will tell you how they worked with my eyes....

What is different about these than other contacts for dry eye?.

Ive tried every possible contact and my eyes are to dry for them, so cant imagine these would be much better.

Rubyslippers, could you tolerate other contacts?

                              Thanks
