I am nearing 6 months of being mostly comfortable most of the time. It is something I am grateful for every single day. Having had some really severe months last winter I doubt I will ever forget how hard that was. I never dreamed I would feel this good again. I have not had actual pain now for months, and never more than 2-3 days of fairly mild discomfort at any time for the last 6 months. Most days I rarely think about it anymore and just realized that I have not used a drop in my eyes for nearly a week.
What I think helped:
One eye with 2 permanent plugs and the lesser eye with one.
Humidifiers, flaxseed oil, and drinking lots of water and resuming regular exercise several times a week which I strongly believe increased healing circulation. Hot compresses helped too.
Huge reduction in stress in my life.
Synergeyes contacts (I credit 80% of my improvement to this one thing).
I am back to wearing contacts 14-15 hours a day, 20/20 vision, no drippy eyes, no feeling of sand in my eyes, no waking up to erosions, and I am doing all outdoor activities again, even running on windy days. I have lost that annoying feeling of thick eyelid margins, all inflammation is completely gone and has not reappeared since the third day after I got the new contacts which hold moisture to my eye every waking moment.
I just don't want anyone here to give up hope. Some of us do get better, much better. Hang in there and keep the faith. I credit my amazing doctor for promising the first day I saw him that he absolutely could promise me that he could get dry eye suffers comfortable once again. He has done this for my sister in law and for 2 of my friends too.
The one thing that did not work was steroid drops. They made me horribly worse.
