  • How to choose OMEGA 3 that actually work!

CJ L. To address your query: Many Omega 3 supplements may not be effective. Vegetarian sources like Flaxseed have low bioavailability, and not everyone can convert it into Omega 3. Unlike marine-sourced Omega 3, vegetarian Omega 3 competes with Omega 6 for the same enzyme, so it's not advisable to take them together with foods or supplements containing Omega 6.

For vegans, algae-sourced Omega 3 is a preferable choice, albeit more costly.

Regarding marine-sourced Omega 3, forms such as Triglycerides and Phospholipids offer high bioavailability, whereas the more common and cheaper ethyl esters form has low bioavailability. Without Cold-Pressed Extraction, the oil may degrade and oxidize. Proper processing, packaging, and storage are crucial to prevent Omega 3 oxidation.

My research indicates that Wild Alaska Salmon Oil by Trident Seafoods, available at Costco, online, or in-store, is a Triglyceride form of Omega 3. It's produced via a gentle cold-press process that maintains the natural balance of fatty acids found in wild salmon, with an optimal DHA to EPA ratio, fulfilling all the mentioned criteria in my reply post on this thread.

Pure Alaska Omega is made from wild-caught salmon found in the clean waters of the North Pacific. Our unique cold-press extraction method shields the oil from damaging high heat and eliminates the need for further refining or chemical treatments. The result is an extra virgin salmon oil that delivers all omega fatty acids, along with vitamins A, D, and E, and the antioxidant Astaxanthin—all naturally found in wild-caught Alaska salmon.

How to choose high-quality Omega 3
Choosing high-quality cold-pressed omega-3 supplements involves a few key considerations:
    1. Third-Party Testing: Ensure the supplement has been tested by independent organizations like NSF International, USP, or ConsumerLab. This guarantees the product’s purity and potency
    2. EPA and DHA Content: Look for supplements that provide at least 500 mg of combined EPA and DHA per serving. These are the most beneficial types of omega-3 fatty acids
    3. Source of Omega-3s: Opt for supplements made from Salmon and small, cold-water fish like sardines, anchovies, or mackerel. These fish are less likely to contain high levels of mercury and other toxins
    4. Cold-Pressed Extraction: Verify that the supplement is indeed cold-pressed. This method preserves the integrity of the omega-3 fatty acids by avoiding heat, which can degrade the oil
    5. Purity and Freshness: Choose products that are molecularly distilled to remove impurities and are packaged in dark bottles to protect from light, which can degrade the oil
    6. Form of the Supplement: Omega-3s come in various forms, including triglycerides, ethyl esters, and phospholipids. Triglycerides are the most natural and easily absorbed form
    7. Sustainability: Look for certifications like MSC (Marine Stewardship Council) or Friend of the Sea, which indicate the fish were sourced sustainably

    8. Additional Ingredients: Avoid supplements with unnecessary fillers, artificial colors, or flavors. Some high-quality options might include added antioxidants like vitamin E to prevent oxidation
